Sweetbay magnolia, scientific name magnolia virginiana, is an evergreen or deciduous tree up to 30 m (100 ft) tall and a member of the Magnoliaceae family.
Also known as merely sweetbay, laurel magnolia, swampbay, swamp magnolia, whitebay, or beaver tree, it is native to the lowlands and swamps of the Atlantic Coastal Plain in the eastern United States.
Its rapid growth, pretty and attractive foliage, and large, showy, fragrant flowers make this tree especially attractive for parks and large yards.
The sweetbay magnolia is often used in horticultural applications to add architectural flair to landscape design and grows as an ornamental tree in the garden.
