Field horsetail , whose botanical name is equisetum arvense, is an herbaceous perennial plant of the subclass equisetidae (horsetails) that is native throughout the Arctic and temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere.
Also called common horsetail, it has thin, felt-like rhizomes that branch freely to form tubers.
The fertile stem is watery in texture, off-white, with four to eight brown scaly leaves and brown-tipped spore cones.
This plant has been used in traditional Austrian herbal medicine as a tea or as a bath salve or poultice for the treatment of skin, musculoskeletal system, kidney, urinary tract, rheumatism, and gout.
