The glossy-leaf paper plant, whose botanical name is fatsia japonica, is a species of flowering plant in the Araliaceae family.

It is also called fatsi, paperplant, false castor oil plant, or Japanese aralia, and is native to southern Japan and Korea.

The plant is an evergreen shrub growing 1-5 m tall with sturdy stems and slightly branched.

The leaves are spirally arranged, large, 20-40 cm wide, leathery, and have 7-9 broad leaflets that divide in two thirds or two halves up to the base of the leaf.
