The glossy-leaf paper plant with the botanical name fatsia japonica is a species of flowering plant in the araliaceae family.
Also known as fatsi, paperplant, false castor oil plant, or Japanese aralia, it is native to southern Japan and Korea.
The leaves are spirally arranged, large, leathery, palmately lobed, 7 to 9 leaves wide, and divided into thirds or two halves to the base of the leaf. The leaves are then edged with coarse, blunt teeth.
The flowers are small, white, and in late fall or early winter there is a dense terminal, complex, diffuse inflorescence, followed in spring by small black fruits.
