Japanese maple with scientific name acer palmatum, is a woody plant native to Japan, Korea, China, eastern Mongolia, and southeastern Russia.
Also called palmate maple, or smooth Japanese maple, it is a deciduous shrub or small tree that grows well as an understory in shady forests, reaching a height of 6 to 10 meters.
The species name palmatum is derived from the Japanese names kaede (frog's hand) and momiji (baby's hand) because of the hand-like shape of the leaves.
The leaves are palmately lobed with 5, 7, or 9 pointed lobes, 4 to 12 cm long and wide.
