Japanese maple with scientific name acer palmatum, is a small tree native to southeastern Korea and central and southern Japan.

It belongs to the Sapindaceae (maple) family and is famous for its aesthetically pleasing form.

In Latin, acer means sharp and palmatum means hand-shaped, referring to the shape of the leaves.

The leaves are small, only two to five inches across, opposite, and simple with five to nine leaflets.

The leaf color changes from green in summer to yellow, bronze, purple, and red in autumn.
