Shingle oak, whose botanical name is quercus imbricaria, is a deciduous tree of the red oak group of oaks.
At maturity, the leaves are dark green, smooth and shiny above and pale green or pale brown below with downy hairs. The midrib is a single yellow color with a groove on top and narrow primary veins.
The tree is native primarily to the Midwest and southern South, southern New York to northern Illinois and eastern Kansas, and central Alabama and southern Arkansas in North America.
It is most commonly found growing at elevations of 100 to 700 meters in well-drained uplands, sometimes along lowland streams.
