Poisonwood, whose botanical name is metopium toxifermum, is a species of flowering tree in the cashew or sumac family anacardiaceae, native to Neotropical America.
Also called Florida poisontree or hog gum, it is related to the black poisonwood (metopium braunii).
This tree produces urushiol, which is as pungent as poison sumac and poison oak.
The poisonwood thrives in the Florida Keys and is also found in various ecosystems in South Florida.
