Botanically named corylus heterophylla, Asian Hazel is a species of hazel native to East Asia, from northern and central China, Korea, Japan, and southeastern Siberia.
It is a small, tall, gray-barked tree or deciduous shrub, usually growing up to 7 m tall, with a trunk up to 20 cm in diameter.
The leaves are rounded with double to slightly lobed edges and often truncated at the tips.
The nuts are edible and very similar to common hazelnuts and are widely grown commercially in China.
