Japanese maple, with the botanical name acer palmatum, is a woody plant native to Japan, Korea, China, eastern Mongolia, and southeastern Russia.
Also known as palmate maple, or smooth Japanese maple , it is a small tall tree or deciduous shrub reaching 6 to 10 meters in height, often growing as an understory plant in shady forests.
The leaves have five, seven, or nine pointed lobes.
In Japan, it is used as an accent tree in Japanese gardens, providing soft shade beside the house in summer and beautiful color in autumn.
