Māhoe, with the scientific name melicytus ramiflorus, is a small tree of the violaceae family endemic to New Zealand.
Also called whiteywood, it is usually 10 meters tall, with a trunk up to 60 cm thick, and has smooth, whitish bark and brittle branches.
The leaves grow "alternate" and are dark green with finely serrated edges (although they are less conspicuous on young plants).
The fruits are eaten by many native birds, but geckos also consume these fruits as a dietary supplement.
