American holly, whose botanical name is ilex opaca, is a species of holly native to the eastern and south-central United States.

This plant usually grows as an understory tree in moist forests.

The leaves alternate, yellow-green, often dull matte to sub glaucous above and pale yellow below.

These leaves are stiff, the edges curved into several sharp points like spikes, and the base is wedge-shaped with a pointed apex.

American holly is often grown as a slow-growing ornamental shrub or tree and cultivated as an evergreen broadleaf.
