American hophornbeam with botanical name ostrya virginiana is a species of ostrya native to eastern North America.
It is a deciduous small tree, usually 18 meters tall, with a trunk 20 to 50 cm thick.
The leaves are ovate, acute, and pinnately veined, with double serrations on the edges.
In Mexico and Central America, this tree is found in the wetter parts of pine forests at elevations between 1200 and 2800 meters.
