The American hornbeam, scientifically known as carpinus caroliniana, is a small hardwood tree native to eastern North America.
It is a small tree, about 10 to 15 meters tall, with an often grooved and twisted trunk.
The leaves are alternate and 3 to 12 centimeters long. The veins protrude to give it a characteristic wavy texture and the edges are jagged.
This tree grows naturally in shady areas with moist soil, especially near river banks.
