American wahoo, whose scientific name is euonymus atropurpureus, is a species of shrub in the bittersweet family.
Also called eastern wahoo, burningbush and hearts bursting with love, it is found primarily in the Midwestern United States.
The leaves are opposite, long and oval, tapering abruptly at the tips, and finely serrated at the margins.
They are green on top and pale hairy underneath, turning bright red in the fall.
