Blackhaw, whose botanical name is viburnum prunifolium, is a species of viburnum tree native to eastern North America, from western Connecticut to eastern Kansas and south to Alabama and Texas.
Also called black haw, blackhaw viburnum, sweet haw, and stag bush, it is a deciduous shrub or small tree growing 2 to 9 meters tall with a short, curved trunk and strongly spreading branches.
The leaves are shiny, green, reddish, and sometimes smooth or covered with rusty tomentum. When fully grown, they are dark green and smooth above and pale and smooth or tomentose below.
Native Americans used the herb of blackhaw for recovery after childbirth, menstrual cramps and menopause .
