The California bay laurel, scientific name umbellularia californica, is a large hardwood tree.
It is native to the coastal forests and foothills of the California Sierras, as well as the coastal forests extending into Oregon.
Typical species include the current California oak, and laurel trees such as Nectandra, Ocotea, Persea, and Ambellaria.
Because of its many uses, this tree has long been valued by Native Americans such as Cahuilla, Chumash, Ohlone, Pomo, Miwok, Yuki, Coos, and Salinan.
Today there is only one native species of laurel tree left in California, namely umbellularia californica.
