Canada plum, whose botanical name is prunus nigra, is a deciduous shrub or small tree with a low, dense, stiff, branched crown of branches.
Also called Canadian plum or black plum, it grows up to 10 meters long and 25 centimeters in trunk diameter and is a species of prunus native to eastern North America.
The leaves are alternate, simple, oblong or ovate, slightly heart-shaped or rounded at the base.
Leaves 5-12 cm long, 3-7 cm wide, wedge-shaped, double-toothed, abruptly contracted and narrowed, pointing to the apex, with prominent hairy veins, midrib.
These leaves emerge from a complex bud, are downy, slightly reddish, smooth, and turn bright green above and paler below as they mature.
