Botanically named prunus caroliniana, carolina laurelcherry is a small evergreen flowering tree native to the lowlands of the southeastern United States.
Also called Carolina cherry laurel, Carolina cherry, or Cherry laurel, it is a small to medium-sized evergreen tree growing 5 to 13 meters tall.
The leaves are dark green, alternate, glossy, and leathery. They are pointed at the base and are usually oval to elliptical with whole margin, but can be serrated.
These leaves and their branches are potentially toxic to livestock and grazing children because they contain large amounts of cyanogenic glycosides.
