The Chinese banyan, whose botanical name is ficus microcarpa, is a tropical tree with pale gray smooth bark and oblanceolate shaped leaves about 5-6 cm long.

Also called Malay banyan, Indian laurel, curtain fig, or banyan, it is a fig tree of the moraceae family that grows to a height of about 12 meters in Mediterranean climates.

The tree is native to tropical Asia, southern China, Taiwan, and the islands of the western Pacific and Australia, and is found mainly in lowland habitats; its natural habitats include rainforests, river banks, beaches, swamps, and mangroves.

The banyan is widely grown as an ornamental plant for gardens and parks, and for planting in containers as indoor plants and bonsai specimens.
