The common hackberry, with the scientific name celtis occidentalis, is a large deciduous tree native to North America.

It is a medium-sized tree with a slender trunk, about 9-15 meters tall.

The leaves have slightly crooked edges, emerge from overlapping buds, are light yellow-green in color, and are downy.

At maturity, the leaves are thin, bright green with a coarse upper surface and a pale green underside.
