The common rhododendron, scientific name rhododendron ponticum, is a species of rhododendron native to the Iberian Peninsula of southwestern Europe and the Caucasus region of northern western Asia.

Also called pontic rhododendron, there are two populations, one in the southwestern Iberian Peninsula and the other in the southern Black Sea Basin.

This plant is a dense suction shrub or small tree that can grow to a height of 5 to 8 meters.

The leaves are evergreen, 6-18 cm long and 2-5 cm wide.

The flowers are 3.5 to 5 cm in diameter, purplish-purple in color, often with small greenish-yellow spots or stripes.

The fruit is a dry capsule 1.5 to 2.5 cm long, containing many small seeds.
