The cucumber tree (often spelled "cucumbertree"), with the scientific name magnolia acuminata, is one of the largest magnolias and one of the most cold hardy.
Also known as cucumber magnolia or blue magnolia, it is native primarily to the Appalachian belt up to western Pennsylvania and New York.
The leaves are oval to oblong, alternate growing, with smooth margins and pubescence on the underside.
These leaves have a pointed tip, hence the species name "acuminate," meaning tapering.
