The cucumbertree, with the scientific name magnolia acuminata, is one of the largest and most cold hardy of the magnolia trees.
Also commonly called cucumber tree (spelled with two words), cucumber magnolia, or blue magnolia, it is native to the Appalachian region.
The leaves are ovate, alternate, with smooth margins and fine hairs on the underside. They are about 12-25 cm long and 6-12 cm wide.
The species nomenclature, "acuminate," means tapering, and is derived from the pointed leaves.
