Dark-Bark Spruce (Picea Jezoensis)

The dark-bark spruce (scientific name: picea jezoensis) is a large evergreen tree with a height of 30 to 50 meters and a trunk diameter of 2 meters.

Also called Ezo spruce, Yezo spruce, or Jezo spruce, it grows naturally in the Changbai Mountains on the border of China and North Korea, from the mountains of central Japan to northeastern Asia, from north to east Siberia.

The leaves are needle-like, flattened in cross section, 15-20 mm long and 2 mm wide. The upper leaves are dark green and poreless, while the lower leaves are pale to white with two tight bands of pores.

An Ainu string instrument called tonkori, the body of which is made of dark-bark spruce.
