The eastern redbud, with the botanical name cercis canadensis, is a large deciduous shrub or small tree native to eastern North America.
It typically grows 6 to 9 m tall with a spread of 8 to 10 m.
The leaves are simple, thin, alternate, whole-rimmed, heart-shaped, and slightly hairy underneath.
In parts of southern Appalachia, the green branches are used as a spice in wild dishes such as venison and opossum.
