Field horsetail with botanical name equisetum arvense is an herbaceous perennial plant of subclass equisetidae (horsetail).
Also called common horsetail, it is native to all polar and temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere.
The plant creeps extensively by its slender rhizome, then branches freely to produce tubers.
Fertile stems are produced in early spring and are not photosynthesized, but sterile green stems begin to grow after the fertile stems die and continue throughout the summer until early fall.
Its name, "common horsetail," refers to the plant's resemblance to a horse's tail when strung together.
