Holly fern (cyrtomium falcatum), a member of the fern family, grows in shade under trees.
The leaves are dark green, curled, shiny, and resemble those of a giant holly.
Like all ancient fern species, holly fern is a non-flowering vascular plant.
It has a sori package on the underside of the leaves for microscopic spores to reproduce.
Shady areas in foundation borders, ground cover plants around old spruce trees, footpath side in the woods, or shady patio pots are all good places to grow holly ferns.
