Cryptomeria japonica, scientific name for Japanese cedar, is a very large evergreen tree that can grow up to 70 meters tall and 4 meters in diameter.
It is also called Japanese redwood and it was believed to be native to Japan, where it was known as Sugi.
The bark is reddish brown and peels in longitudinal stripes, the leaves are spirally arranged like needles, and the bulbous fruit is round and scale-like.
It grows in forests with deep, well-drained soil and is exposed to hot, humid conditions and grows quickly.
