The Japanese privet, scientifically known as ligustrum japonicum, is a species of ligustrum (privet) native to Central and South Japan (Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa) and Korea.
Also known as wax-leaf privet, it is a small tree or evergreen shrub growing 2 to 5 m tall with smooth, light grayish brown bark.
The leaves are opposite, thick and leathery in texture, with whole margins. They are dark green above and pale yellowish green below.
The fruit is an oval seed, about 10 mm long, which blooms in early winter in a waxy, greenish-rich color and ripens to a purple-black color. In Japan, the fruit is often equated with mouse droppings.
