Japanese silverberry with botanical name elaeagnus umbellata is a deciduous shrub or small tree with a dense crown, usually growing to 3.5 meters tall.

It is also known as umbellata oleaster, autumn olive, autumn elaeagnus, or spreading oleaster, and belongs to family elaeagnaceae.

The ripe fruit is fleshy, juicy, and sweet, with a thin skin covering the entire fruit, 3 to 9 mm long, about 5 mm in diameter, and weighing an average of 137 milligrams.

In some areas of the United States, this tree is planted for wildlife management, as it provides food and shelter for deer, nesting sites for birds, and its fruits also serve as food for wildlife.
