Mahoe or whitewood, with the scientific name melicytus ramiflorus, is a small tree in the violaceae family endemic to New Zealand.
The plant is dioecious with small yellowish flowers and grows directly from bare twigs - the flowers have a strong and pleasant fragrance.
Its dark green "alternate" leaves are 5-15 cm long and 3-5 cm wide, with finely serrated edges (but less prominent on younger plants).
