Pepperwood, whose scientific name is umbellularia californica, is a large hardwood tree also known as spicebush, cinnamon bush, or peppernut tree.
It is native to the coastal forests and hills of the Sierras of California and the coastal forests of Oregon.
The leaves have fragrant smooth edges and a lance-shaped shape, similar to bay laurel leaves, but usually narrower and without wrinkles on the edges.
The taste of the leaves is also similar to that of bay laurel leaves, but stronger and may be mistaken for bay laurel leaves.
