Planes (scientific name is platanus) is a genus composed of a small number of tree species native to the Northern Hemisphere.
These are also called plane tres, and mature trees typically grow to a height of 30 to 50 meters.
The leaves are simple and alternate, with a large petiolar base that wraps around the entire young shoot in the leaf axils.
It is widely used as a garden tree throughout Europe, and in China it often appears in classic poetry as a lament for the fall of leaves in autumn.
