The pūriri, whose scientific name is vitex lucens, is an evergreen tree endemic to New Zealand.

The tree typically grows up to 20 meters tall, with a trunk up to 1.5 meters thick, often more, and a spreading canopy.

Leaves are glossy, dark green, palmately shaped, and usually have five lobes, sometimes three.

Puriri is a very important food source for native wildlife, as it provides fruit and nectar in rare seasons.
