The red maple, scientific name acer rubrum, is one of the most common and widespread deciduous trees in eastern and central North America.
It is also known as swamp maple, water maple, or soft maple, and has leaves typically 9 to 11 cm long on mature trees.
In autumn, the leaves usually turn a characteristic brilliant red, but occasionally turn yellow or orange in some individuals.
The fall colors are most spectacular in the north where the climate is cooler.
