The shining karamu with the scientific name coprosma lucida is a tall shrub with green stems and pairs of shiny green leaves.
The leaves are 12 to 17 cm long, elliptic, tapering toward the stem and leaf tips. The main veins are pale, and ridges develop on the upper and lower surfaces of the leaves.
The name coprosma is derived from copros (Greek) "dung" and osmé "odor", referring to its smell. And lucida means "shining".
