Sweetbay, with the botanical name magnolia virginiana, is an evergreen or deciduous tree up to 30 m tall and a member of the magnolia family magnoliaceae.
Also known as sweetbay magnolia, laurel magnolia, swampbay, swamp magnolia, white bay, or beaver tree, it is native to the lowlands and swamps of the Atlantic coastal plain in the eastern United States.
The leaves are simple, not lobed or pinnate, alternate, with whole margins, 6-12 cm long and 3-5 cm wide.
In warmer regions, this tree is appreciated for its clean evergreen and attractive foliage.
In addition, its large, showy, fragrant flowers and fast growth make this tree a good choice for large gardens and yards.
