Heavenly bamboo, with the scientific name nandina domestica, is a species of flowering plant in the berberidaceae family.
Also commonly known as sacred bamboo or nandina, it is native to East Asia from the Himalayas to Japan.
It is widely grown in gardens as an ornamental plant with attractive new leaves in spring and bright red leaves in fall.
Young leaves turn bright pink to red in spring, then green. Older leaves turn red or purple again before falling off.
Despite its common name "bamboo," it is not a bamboo but an upright evergreen shrub, usually with unbranched stems resembling bamboo.
