Letterkenny

I've been watching the show Letterkenny on Hulu, and I have some thoughts.

First of all, the show is incredibly watchable. It has colorful, sympathetic characters who have significant flaws that lend themselves to amusing, high-tension comedic situations. It's a Canadian show.

What strikes me about the show is that it presents a much more balanced hermetic Dasein than we have here in the US. In fact, this is one of the first things that leaps out at me about a majority of foreigners and foreign entertainment. Here in the US, toxic femininity has saturated our media through its promoted stand-up comics and shows. A balanced masculinity is considered to be intolerable. That's why shows like Duck Dynasty and Last Man Standing, e.g., are barely tolerated by the media establishment, and even then, only because of how profitable they are.

That being said, while this show, unlike many American shows, doesn't dwell on social issues to the point of being preachy, they aren't shy about coming down hard to the left on most social issues, such as PC Culture (even as they flaunt it to some limited extent) and abortion.

It's interesting to me to see how they perceive American culture and politics, and I think it may reflect Canada's perception of America, generally. I get the sense that they don't realize just how out of hand the left in the US has become. There, while they have come out hard left on many issues, they aren't so far left as America's hard left, and they don't understand just how toxic the left is here.

As an American, it's almost like being in a relationship with an abusive woman, and watching that woman project to the rest of the world, and then the rest of the world white knighting out of ignorance.
