History
Societal attitudes towards same-sex relationships have varied over time and place, from expecting all males to engage in same-sex relationships to casual integration, through acceptance, to seeing the practice as a minor sin, repressing it through law enforcement and judicial mechanisms, and to proscribing it under penalty of death.
Many historical figures, including Socrates, Lord Byron, Edward II, and Hadrian, have had terms such as gay or bisexual applied to them; some scholars, such as Michel Foucault, have regarded this as risking the anachronistic introduction of a contemporary construction of sexuality foreign to their times,[44] though others challenge this

Africa
Though often ignored or suppressed by European explorers and colonialists, homosexual expression in native Africa was also present and took a variety of forms. Due to the African cultural values and religious beliefs, we have turned a blind eye to homosexuality.
According to BBC NEWS (27 February 2008), Homosexuality is outlawed in 38 African countries, In 13 Nations homosexuality is either legal or has no laws pertaining to it. In recent years, more first world countries are considering or implementing laws that limit or prohibit aid to countries that restrict the rights of homosexuals In spite of this, many countries are continuing to breach international human rights laws and refusing to consider increasing LGB rights, and in some cases drafting laws to increase sanctions against LGB lifestyles.
In Mauritania, Sudan, and northern Nigeria, homosexuality can be punishable by death. In Uganda, offenders can gain a maximum of life imprisonment for homosexual acts. South Africa has the most liberal attitudes toward gays and lesbians, with a constitution that guarantees gay and lesbian rights, and legal same-sex marriage.
LGB rights in East Africa in particular Kenya, same-sex- sexual activity in males is illegal and the penalty is up to 14 years imprisonment, females are not specifically covered by the penal code, there is no recognition in same-sex relationships, same-sex marriage is not mentioned on 2010 constitution and same-sex adaption is prohibited. (Kenya Constitution, 2001)
This Lesson will investigate the factors influencing homosexuality in the Youth of Africa. It will go father and show if the sexual preference is due to biological, environmental, social learning, curse, abnormality, or even a sin. Cause for Sexual Orientation
There is no simple, single cause for sexual orientation that has been conclusively demonstrated, but research suggests that it is by a combination of genetic, hormonal, and environmental influences, with biological factors involving a complex interplay of genetic factors and the early uterine environment. Research over several decades has demonstrated that sexual orientation ranges along a continuum, from exclusive attraction to the opposite sex to exclusive attraction to the same sex.
As a third world country, we have just started realizing that homosexuality, exists and it is here to stay, people who are involved are our children, brothers, sisters, and significant others, and due to our cultural background and religious belief we have labeled the gay community and until we understand sexual orientation and sexual preference we will continue to label them. According to society, it is a problem that needs to be addressed, a sin to be prayed about, an abomination, or even a curse, but we have to learn how and where they are coming from and if they are a social misfit and it can happen to any one of us.

I believe lack of acceptance towards homosexual youths is resulting in stigma and psychological disturbances towards them which can result in drug abuse, prostitution, HIV/AIDS, and breaking of home or marriages.
This research will help us know what really is happening among the gay community and how we can embrace and accept them for who they are despite their sexual orientation, that is why I will identify the course and come up with the factor influencing homosexuality in youths of Africa and a solution that will benefit gay community and society at large.

Understanding Homosexuality

This study will educate the society and make them understand homosexuality, sexual orientation, and why one would prefer to be homosexual and have the fact before we judge them, to minimize the stigmatization and labeling that the Gay community goes through. It is only changed that is constant and the problem is here we should learn to tackle it, deal with it or live with it.
Since (1968) American Psychologist Association decided that homosexuality is not an abnormality or disorder but a preference, although culture is changing over space and time, and homosexuality is seen as a deviation from our cultural and religious norms. We need to understand, accept and live harmoniously with the Gay community.

Homosexuality
Homosexuality is a romantic or sexual attraction or behavior between members of the same sex or gender. As a sexual orientation, homosexuality refers to "an enduring pattern of or disposition to experience sexual, affectionate, or romantic attractions" primarily or exclusively to people of the same sex; "it also refers to an individual's sense of personal and social identity based on those attractions, behaviors expressing them, and membership in a community of others who share them."

Homosexuality is one of the three main categories of sexual orientation, along with bisexuality and heterosexuality, within the heterosexual-homosexual continuum. Scientific and medical understanding is that sexual orientation is not a choice, but rather a complex interplay of biological and environmental factors. While some religious organizations hold the view that homosexual activity is unnatural or dysfunctional, research shows that homosexuality is an example of normal variation in human sexuality and is not in and of itself a source of negative psychological effects. Prejudice and discrimination against homosexual and bisexual people, however, have been shown to cause psychological harm.
The most common terms for homosexual people are lesbian for women and gay for men, though gay is also used to refer generally to homosexual men and women. The number of people who identify as gay or lesbian—and the proportion of people who have same-sex sexual experiences—are difficult for researchers to estimate reliably for a variety of reasons. Gay and Lesbian Youths
Gay and lesbian youth bear an increased risk of suicide, substance abuse, school problems, and isolation because of a "hostile and condemning environment, verbal and physical abuse, rejection and isolation from family and peers". Further, LGBT youths are more likely to report psychological and physical abuse by parents or caretakers and more sexual abuse. Suggested reasons for this disparity are that (1) LGBT youths may be specifically targeted on the basis of their perceived sexual orientation or gender non-conforming appearance, and (2) that "risk factors associated with sexual minority status, including discrimination, invisibility, and rejection by family members...may lead to an increase in behaviors that are associated with risk for victimization, such as substance abuse, sex with multiple partners, or running away from home as a teenager." A 2008 study showed a correlation between the degree of rejecting behavior by parents of LGB adolescents and negative health problems in the teenagers studied: Wikipedia (2012)

Higher rates of family rejection were significantly associated with poorer health outcomes. On the basis of odds ratios, lesbian, gay, and bisexual young adults who reported higher levels of family rejection during adolescence were 8.4 times more likely to report having attempted suicide, 5.9 times more likely to report high levels of depression, 3.4 times more likely to use illegal drugs, and 3.4 times more likely to report having engaged in unprotected sexual intercourse compared with peers from families that reported no or low levels of family rejection.

Legality
Most nations do not prohibit consensual sex between unrelated persons above the local age of consent. Some jurisdictions further recognize identical rights, protections, and privileges for the family structures of same-sex couples, including marriage. Some nations mandate that all individuals restrict themselves to heterosexual relationships; that is, in some jurisdictions homosexual activity is illegal. Offenders can face the death penalty in some fundamentalist Muslim areas such as Iran and parts of Nigeria. There are, however, often significant differences between official policy and real-world enforcement. Wikipedia (2012)

Society and Sociology
Societal acceptance of non-heterosexual orientations such as homosexuality is lowest in Asian and African countries and is highest in Europe, Australia, and the Americas. Western society has become increasingly accepting of homosexuality over the past few decades. Wikipedia (2012)
Conclusion
Though ignored in Africa sexual orientation and homosexuality do exist and unless we understand and accept that homosexual expression in native Africa was also present and took a variety of forms. Due to the African cultural values and religious beliefs, we have turned a blind eye to homosexuality.
There are many factors and variables resulting in sexual orientation.
