Are adults who have reached the age of 18 adults or not? Are adults that have reached the age of 18 capable of making their own decisions or not? When you refer to 18 year olds as children, you are taking away their adulthood that they reached the moment they get passed puberty. If you are so concerned with prostitution, don't hire a prostitute. If you don't like strip clubs, don't go to strip clubs. Legislating morality never works, and I truly hope this bullshit gets struck down. If 18 year olds want to enter into a contract to take off their clothes at a club, then let them! Why? They are adults! You may not agree with their decision, but it is their decision to make!

A bit of a knee jerk reaction but human trafficking is a big problem in that line of work and girls don't become immune to it once they reach the magical age of 18 or 21 for that matter. Of course we have to keep the big picture in mind and ask what makes New Orleans a magnet for this kind of criminal activity? I would venture to say it's reflective of the very culture of the city itself and this is beyond the scope of a minimum age requirement.

BTW I have a new post on police accountability if you are interested.

The culture of the city has always been a little to the right of Libertine. Human trafficking is a problem, no doubt. Not every stripper becomes a prostitute, and not every prostitute is a victim of human trafficking. I think treating adults like babies is the wrong way to combat a human trafficking problem. Legalizing prostitution would all but eliminate it, but the blue-hairs ain't ready for that.

Legalization is sort of a double edged sword. It seems like an increase in freedom in theory because you get to do something that was outright prohibited before, but in practice it can be just as invasive as outright prohibition. I would not put it past city officials to view it solely as a revenue generation scheme. Also, ending the war on drugs, which also won't happen anytime soon, would free up LEO resources to combat human trafficking.

I'm not a feminist, but this smacks of paternalism and misogyny. Are 18-year old women so stupid/immature/weak that they can't decide what they want for their own bodies? If so, I guess they probably shouldn't be allowed to sign contracts, or drive, or make pornos, or get married either. And how can we be sure they'll have grown up enough in just 3 years to make these kind of important decisions? Maybe it would be better if we went back to the good ol days where the father decided everything until the husband took over. Or, if that doesn't sound fair, I suppose we could always just let the well-intentioned politicians make all the decisions, for all of us, all of the time. To keep us safe.

For my baby daughter, she will taught enough about personal responsibility. Then, by the time she is 18 she has a good foot to start on. I think letting the government "educate" children will go down in history as a huge mistake.
