Back in 1999 I had a surprise for my wife so we got in our car and drove all afternoon and into the night. My wife had no idea where we were going and not knowing drove her mad. Finally about half an hour before we pulled into Stonehenge car park I gave in and told her.
1999 was the first year the stones had been open to the public since 1985 when police cornered and attacked a peace convoy headed for the stones which ended in what was called the Battle of the Beanfield.
Reaching the stones in darkness we walked into a large crowd of people who had also travelled. Drums and music filled the air as people waited for the coming dawn and hoped for a clear sky.
As the sky lightened me and my wife moved towards the heelstone and watched a sight that has been watched since pre history.
The magical sight of the sun rising on the summer solstice, then turning around to view the ancient stones.. (Sorry for the picture quality but back then cameras had film.)
In the morning crowds again will gather at the stones for this years solstice, a magical event for anyone who can go.
The photos were taken some years ago but are still clear. Good pictures!

This must have been an awesome experience. The photos are still good but I bet witnessing it first hand would have been an experience of a lifetime!
