Boys And Girls Club Summer Camp in Caizan, Panama - Fun Friday by A Panama Mama

in life •  7 years ago

My kids have been attending the Boys and Girls Club in Caizan for two weeks. We go twice a week because it is a really windy, 25 minute ride down the mountain. The scenery is beautiful though. Right now it is considered "summer" in Panama, so the kids are out of school and the club is doing a summer camp.

The camp involves doing a short Bible study, English class and then a competition outside. I helped the kids out for the first few days by translating in their classes since everything is done in Spanish. Thankfully the teachers and helpers know a little English, so this really helps, but I want my kids to learn Spanish.

My kids definitely stand out, but the Panamanian kids are slowly beginning to try to talk to them!

In the English class, they go over body parts, colors, numbers, days of the week, months, directions, etc. A lot of basic vocabulary. I am hoping that my kids will pick up on some of the Spanish meanings for these as they hear both languages. So far, they are doing okay!

Their favorite part is the competition that happens right before we leave. There is usually some type of obstacle course that some of the kids do that leads to a big event at the end. They have done a tug-of-war a few times and the kids always end up screaming and having a great time.

Tug-of-War is serious business!

One part of the competition that is a new thing to me was this game pictured below. The kids had to tie a string around their waist. Then on the end of the string was a nail. They had to squat down and get the nail directly into the mouth of a Coke bottle without using their hands. It was a pretty good game to watch and looked like fun to do as well!

We have only spent four days with these kids at the summer camp and they are already opening up to us. Now, it is just time for us to learn their names! I am glad we have joined them even if some days that four hours out of the middle of my day does not seem like a good idea! I hope that my kids will pick up some Spanish as well as some Panamanian culture from this club time.

Check out this one minute YouTube video of the water game and the balloon trivia challenge. These were fun activities that the kids loved.

It has been a lot of fun. I'm glad you like it. ;)

This is a great way to hone your kids' social skills and learning Spanish! I love the activities and might have enjoyed this myself. lol

Yes, they have fun there. I'm glad we are able to go and hopefully they are getting some Spanish down. :)

Aja! They will be able to speak Spanish soon.

That looks like they're having a lot of fun and probably a good way to organically learn Spanish and make friends :)

It's an incredible experience you're offering to them!

I hope they're able to quickly pick up some Spanish. I was asking them a few words on the way on the fourth day and they were words I haven't taught them and they knew them. I was impressed! I know they will quickly pick it up...especially if they're having fun. The drive though...it's like torture and death at every turn.

That's so cool that they're learning so quickly and not surprising... little sponges :). If only my mama brain worked so well!

I saw the pics you posted the other day on the journey, you'll have to post more to really emphasis the magnitude of this feat :) Such a good mama for taking them!

The road over there is crazy. Curves all over the place. I just really want them to get some good Spanish in. It is right that they are little sponges. I sure hope that is the case. I don't know how their dad is going to learn, on the other hand... ;)

He'll need to if he wants to know what they're talking about as they get older and wiser lol... Wise to the fact that he can't understand them :)

Lol - that is so true!! I have a friend here whose daughter was born in Canada (now 6), so she speaks English and her grandparents are Panamanian, but she's figured out they don't speak English so when she wants to tell her brother something in front of them, she talks to him in English so they can't understand. Ha! So sneaky. The mom is always having to tell her to speak Spanish so they can know what she is saying. My kids will be that same way someday...I hope!

You can see that they really enjoyed themselves, here in Venezuela that is called the Vacional Plan. I love it because children have fun and learn at the same time! it's good that you spent that time in family <3

Yes, it's a lot of fun. I'm glad they have something like that near you as well. :) I just hope they pick up the espanol soon. ;)

Really great team building activities.

Summer camps are the best XD

Yes, my kids are having a great time. They do have some fun activities. Thanks for stopping by.
