Smile Challenge and Curly Girl Hair Review - Thumbs Up Thursday by A Panama Mama

in life •  7 years ago

Recently my good Steemit friend, Duro, invited me to participate in the Smile Challenge. I'm all for smiles, but I rarely take selfies of myself...unless it's a really good hair day. You see, I have naturally curly hair and it isn't always my friend. Sometimes it's crazy poofy.

These pictures are definitely not the worst of the worst. I don't want those days documented!!! Sometimes half of it looks dry and frizzy and half of it looks normal. Some days, I just don't want to deal with it, so I put it in a ponytail and go on with my "bad hair don't care" day!

After moving to Panama, I was tired of my hair and it was time to try something new! That's when I found the Facebook page for Curly Girls. I thought I would give it a try and I'm so glad that I did! It really makes a difference in my hair and for once, I finally know how to treat my hair so it's nice back to me!

The first rule of this group is no more shampooing your hair. The only way to now wash your hair is with conditioner. Not just any conditioner, but conditioner with no silicone. Remember, I started this after moving to Panama and then decided to find a silicone-free conditioner. Thankfully our local Todo a Dollar (Everything $1 - although barely anything in the store is actually $1) carries a brand that has no -cone ingredients! It worked on my hair for a few months, but during that time, it was glorious. (My hair is picky and likes to keep me guessing as to what it really needs.)

I also learned that the diffuser, plopping my hair and good gel are my friends. You'll have to check out their page to learn more about these if you also have curly hair. I am happy that my hair now lasts more than one day and sometimes my "2nd day" hair is better than the first!

Your hair looks great! I have some natural curl, but not quite as curly as yours. Also mine is shorter than yours. Only my hair stylist can blow it dry and smooth it out with no curl. I pretty much smooth out my bangs and go with curly on the rest of it! :)

I have straightened my hair once. It was so weird looking, I never did it again. My friend told me I should try it again (it's been like 20 years). She said there has been a lot of advances in hair straightening appliances since then. :)

you have beautiful curls!

Oh my, @apanamamama, I would just die to have hair like yours! I have had a perm to get those same curls ever since I was in Jr. High. My one sister has naturally curly/frizzy hair, but I've got totally straight hair. Ah, well, we always wish we had the thing we don't have, right?

Nice to see your curls, though. I've upvoted and resteemed this article as one of my daily post promotions for the @mitneb Curation Trail Project. It will be featured in the @mitneb Curation Trail Project Daily Report for 26 JAN 2018.

Cheers!

Thanks! My mom didn't know what to do with my hair when I was younger, so she always brushed it out. I always wanted it to be straight - like after I washed it and combed it out straight. :) Now I'm pretty happy with it most days...or I just don't have time to even look in the mirror and see how it looks. ;) Your sister should check out the Curly Girl routine. It's awesome! :)

YAY! I love smiles! They're my favorite!

Good to know. You should do the smile challenge then. ;)

What exactly is the smile challenge?

Well, I didn't exactly follow the rules which were to also post the pic of the person who nominated you. I put a link in the first paragraph to the challenge post. I just put some selfies in mine, not necessarily the requirements.

Oh okay! I’ll check it out!

I think it is a question in which men do not understand))) Girls with straight hair want curly and frizz them. Conversely, girls with curly they want to straighten curly hair. I really like your new way of hair care. You look attractive)
P.s. And Yes, I have straight hair, I want curly))))

Lol - yes that's the truth. I'm actually happy with my hair now but went through a phase where I wanted it straight. I'm not sure what my kids will think. One boy definitely wants straight hair and his is mostly straight. My daughter will be the one I will wonder about. My mom didn't have curly hair, so she didn't really know what to do with mine or how to help me. Hopefully I can help my girl out.

You have a very lovely smile and some luscious locks. I hope this #smilechallenge turns into the norm and not just a challenge. One of the best things you can do for a stranger is give them an authentic smile. You never know what that person is going through and the power of a smile can be so beneficial

Thanks! Yes, smiling is good fun. In Panama, it's not very common. They can tell who the Americans are because we smile (and we look American, duh). But when I smile at the Panamanians (who never smile first), they usually smile back...and often come over to talk to us. I guess it breaks the cultural ice.

Haha sometimes it could be that the locals are just intimidated by the foreigners. It's the same thing here in South Korea, if I don't initiate the smile, it almost never happens, but once I do, people are very friendly

Very good

Nice pictures...☺

You look absolutely darling my friend!! You are gorgeous as well as your curls!! I love the new curly look that the conditioner has done for you! I do the same with my hair and only wash with shampoo once a month. We call it Co-Washing short for conditioner washing! I love the pictures of your little cutie too❣️❣️
