Since joining Steemit, I have been asked many times why we chose to move our entire family to Panama. In part 1, I established a little background about our decision. In Part 2, I will go more in detail about the reasons.
Source
My husband is all about making lists. When he started looking into Panama, his lists started and quickly grew. Lists for why we should move. Lists for what we could do there. Lists for why this would be better than raising the kids in the USA. There were hundreds of reasons we chose to move to Panama, yet it was difficult to put into words when someone would ask. I also find this post difficult to write as some reasons will not make sense and different audiences will understand the reasons differently.
One big reason we decided to move was for business reasons. Flipping was becoming common place in Texas, so job opportunities were dwindling. There are also many laws and rules that must be followed that make building and construction work difficult. In Panama, there are many of the same laws, but more opportunities. The area we live in is a great example. Our neighborhood has plenty of space for building other homes. With @panamapilgrim being a former architect, builder and home flipper, this is a great project for him, and one that he has always wanted to have the freedom to do. Of course it will take years to complete, but it is something he wants to do.
Another main reason we decided to move to Panama was for our children. We wanted them to have different opportunities while growing up, like learning Spanish. This will help them later in life be able to have careers and travel in a larger number of countries. We also wanted them to be able to enjoy being outside and this is a great environment to do that basically every day. We wanted them to grow up without the threat of being taken from us because of the alternative choices we have made, such as homeschool, vaccinations, and religious decisions. (The threat is real. Check @familyprotection’s blog for plenty of stories.)
Source
In Panama, the culture is geared toward family instead of entertainment and this is something we like. Every weekend is not filled with running from one practice to another with no time to enjoy a meal with our family. The people here are not trying to be the newest reality TV star or act a certain way to get attention. The culture is slower paced, which enables us to meet and get to know our friends without feeling like we need to rush to the next event. Every day is not filled with activities that disrupt family life, like soccer practice, Girl Scouts, after school activities, homework and the like. That is why Mother’s Day is a national holiday and everything is closed. You go to Mama’s house and celebrate with all the rest of the family! In the US, we did not agree with the direction the culture was moving away from traditional values and laws were being put in place by the government that we did not agree with.
Source
These are a small list of reasons that we decided to move away from Texas. But you are thinking that we could have moved to any country, so why exactly did we decide on Panama and more specifically the area that we chose to move. That is when the lists upon lists started to grow. Many countries were compared and crossed out based on various requirements. The main one was homeschooling was legal. This actually made us cross out Costa Rica and various other countries. Visas had to be relatively easy to attain and cost of living had to be relatively low. This crossed out most of Europe. Spanish was also on the list since I speak it, if we had to move somewhere with another language. Through all the searching, Panama continued to look like a great destination for our relocation.
When we originally were looking, we thought Boquete would be the best place to move because of the number of expats there. Upon examining our current town in Tierras Altas, talking to other expats and visiting the two, Boquete did not have what we were looking for exactly. Tierras Altas has some extra items that made it a good fit for us. The neighborhood we were looking at was a great location, a gated community, had plenty of space and had paved roads (which is a big deal here)! There is also a quilting ministry and store here, which I love! Many homeschool families live here and we have been able to open up a homeschool lending library in our home (although it is not totally set up yet). This has been a tremendous blessing to all of us.
Other fun reasons that this town fits us well is that there is a great Mexican restaurant here. It is yummy! Also there are at least two great places to eat pizza and you know that makes our kids happy. Although we do not have everything we were used to in Texas, we still are finding ways to make life enjoyable here. This is, of course, not every single reason we moved to Panama, and you may not think any of them are really good reasons to move, but we are happy with our decision to be here.
Stay tuned for Part 3 where I discuss ways Panama has met and not met some of our expectations.

Courage comes in many colors, and yours is its own special shade. I, too, am inspired by your story, even as I am disturbed by the reasons that made it necessary. No one knows what the future holds, but the steps you've taken may turn out to be among the most important turning points in your life. It will be interesting to watch things happen. Thank you for letting us be part of the journey.

Hi @apanamamama! I love what you said about the culture in Panama being centered on family, rather than entertainment. I, too, have noticed this about the US and I find it baffling!
It takes a lot of courage and conviction to pack up your entire life and family in search of a better way. So impressive and inspirational, and a great reminder that we only get one life and it should be lived in alignment with our values rather than misaligned cultural expectations.
Looking forward to Part III!

Thanks for sharing this and that is so awesome that you were able to make this change for your family. It sounds like you will have a successful and wonderful life there with your husband and children. I still want to improve my Spanish and I'm in my 50's. I'm about to continue working on that as soon as I get all of my Christmas stuff put away. Did I tell you I learned Spanish growing up in the schools in El Paso, TX? Also took 2 semesters in college. Felt okay about reading and writing it and really needed to speak it with people. Then I took 3 semesters of French, because my Math degree required French, German or Russian when I transferred from UTEP in El Paso to UT Austin. Anyway, any great ideas for learning it better or faster would be appreciated! I just feel like I'm supposed to know how to speak, read and write it. Have a great day @apanamamama!

Duolingo is good and it's a free app. You can "test out" of the levels you already know. Spanish for Gringos is good. I would check out some stuff at the library. Watching old Destinos videos on Youtube would be beneficial. I took 2 years of French in college too for a BA in Spanish (had to do 2 years in another language). I can say one sentence (and it's probably with a German accent because my prof was German)!

How's the Internet speed and connection? I would be really worried about that and want at least two working ways to get online in case one failed temporarily.
Do your children use duolingo? My kids are using it. Perhaps it will help yours learn the language more as you hoped. They have the app on their phones, and they can use it on the web.
Have you experienced any racism? I have heard that Panama is great in that regard, and people are all considered equals based on their ethnic background.
Thanks for the tip for Spirit Airlines too. Wow, those are great prices!

I have my phone on a different internet than my computer. Internet is usually great (unless you forget to pay the bill which I did this month - then you go pay it and it comes right back on). Our upload is 1Mbps and download is 3Mbps and it's $22 a month. They have fiber optics but it doesn't reach our neighborhood yet! I need to get the kids on duolingo. They're about to start an immersion group at a boys and girls club...they just don't know it yet. I haven't had any moments of racism. Most people are in awe of our 5 curly blonde haired kids. I heard a lady say recently she'd never seen hair that color. We are watched everywhere we go like a celebrity or a parade. Spirit does have amazing deals at times. April is a great time to visit - super cheap and still not in rainy season, school has just started back so less kids out and about, cheaper hotels then too since it isn't summer anymore, etc.
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

I'll keep that in mind April wise. What is considered "summer" there? Winter is the rainy season, right? I've heard Boquete has rain, but it will rain only a couple hours a day then clear up. It isn't like Seattle and rains constantly for weeks, right? That would be depressing.

Have you and your family gone to see a movie in a city theater? One story I read on one of the expat boards gave a pretty negative review on going to the main town's theater near Boquete. They said there were problems with young men and gangs.

Amen to this. I don't flip houses, or speak Spanish, or need wide-open spaces (although that is nice), but having no threat towards our family based on ethical and religious decisions - that is one thing we earnestly desire. It feels as if that freedom we currently have could disappear at a moment's notice. Please, just leave us alone to tend to our family. I figure we have about 7 years. We are practicing the "homesteading" mindset, but we still have a long way to go. @ironshield
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

Yes, it is true that it could disappear! Scary! There are just too many crazy stories out there. Homesteading is good - we need to learn more of that as well. A friend here wants to set up a community where some of us learn how to do canning, some farming, some raising cattle, etc. so everyone knows something and then share with the rest of the group.

I'm from Australia, and we have a similar culture to the US. That's why your experience interests me. Reading about how it is more family centred. I am in Spain at the moment, and that is very much how the Spanish are as well. You really notice it. And friendly and generous people.
I think western cultures have become bogged down in selfishness and corruption. Its lead to a ridiculous cost of living, especially in Australia where everyone is spending vast sums of money on houses, and then making their houses better than their neighbours, etc.
I look forward to following your story.

Yes, it is crazy how much people will spend on houses, etc. People here are happy with a one bedroom house without running water inside. I mean, that's pretty common in some areas! Some are even more primitive than that. It isn't very common to go into debt here to live. Most people live within their means and a "normal" salary is around $20-40 a day (gardener, construction worker). Thanks for stopping by and following along! :)

This exactly!! Tourists are quick to dismiss locals as just poverty stricken and living in horrible conditions but honestly, we come from a place where people will toss out the kitchen appliances because they aren’t the trending finish and go hundreds of thousands into debt to keep up the facade... I wonder what most of us would have if we only bought it with what we had already earned?

I love this. As a digital nomad who (sort of) settled for several years already in the Philippines, living in the metropole that is Manila, I miss that.
Truth is, while I live in a compound which consists of one large family (three families all in their own house actually), Filipino culture is very Americanized and so-called telenovelas (soaps) and marketing, also malls, dominate the desires of many. TV commercials are still a popular thing, quality even not required.
If the Missus, which still hasn’t been found nor is actually looked for but who knows what life throws at one, agrees I surely am not ready to settle here but the next location, and hopefully a final one will be closer to a more native and less metropole life. Currently I am looking at whether Namibia or Aruba, hopefully in some years. Would love Cambodia, it’s always been a dream, but overpopulation is an issue in Asia and definitely not something I plan with long term.

Wow, sounds like you have some great plans for the future! Yes, there is a lot of American culture here in Panama as well (although it is missing a lot as well). It is very common to see English words on buildings, clothing, cars, etc. I think it has to do with the Canal being owned by the US for so long. Most people even have English names, Jhonny (misspelled of course), for example. ;)

Panama did for a long time have additional rights for US citizens, not just as expats living in Panama but they were almost considered as locals with additional rights other nationalities didn’t benefit. Aren’t they currently lifting those, I vaguely remember reading something about that a while ago in the Guardian.

There is some crime. The crime of convenience. If it's here and available, they'll take it. Murder and other large crimes, not so much. A gated community gives you a sense of security although it definitely isn't 100% secure. We had some things taken from our home that were left sitting outside at one point - tools and such. Overall, it is relatively safe here, you just have to stay on guard and be smart. We also have a guard dog, flood lights, etc.

Ah, just traditional God fearing values that are being stripped away daily. We don't practice anything weird or out of the ordinary, but we want to raise our kids to know what is right and wrong and the line is being blurred more and more every day. Every TV show, book, movie, commercial, pretty much everything is against traditional values these days. Hard to get away from it.
