Ten years before the supposed moon landing they had an extremely hard time just trying to get rockets into space. Then all of a sudden there are back to back successful return missions to the Moon? The sheer complexity of going from simple rocketry to return lunar missions is insane.

I think we could probably do it now with our technology after about a decade of failed attempts, but that would mean spending a lot of money and calling the government out on its bs. China may actually be the first ones to do it with their proposal by 2030. There's probably valuable resources and precious metals on the moon which is likely their reason.
