Where Do We Go When We Die?

in life •  7 years ago  (edited)

Recently I lost my grandmother at the age of 85 years of age. Living to 85 is an achievement in itself when you're born in the 30's and can recall memories of war as well as living through lead containments in everything and asbestos.

During the funeral service as a Bible passage was being read out and a few religious words were being spoken, I got to wondering: where do we go when we die?

Depending on whether you are religious or not, or what religion you believe in, you'll have different ideas about what happens to us when we die.

I am not a religious person whatsoever, I hate the title atheist. Because it feels like an intentional dig at those who consider themselves Christian or whatever. If I were to label my belief it would just be: impartial.

But the concept of "going to heaven" and getting to live forever, watching over your loved ones who are still alive is a strange concept when you think about it.

Who honestly wants to live forever? How do you handle family arguments/issues where you might not want to see a loved one again? Do you know you're dead? Do you get a choice to go to heaven and live forever, or sleep?

The concept of heaven or a place you go when you die is comforting to some, but if you're aware of what is happening, it would be quite scary knowing that you've left and gone some strange place you can never leave once you get there.

I think the simplest explanation is when we die, we just go to sleep. We stop existing. And honestly, I find comfort in that. It's normal human behaviour to be afraid of death, even those who say they aren't, deep down are afraid of death.

If you were to die and go to heaven, knowing that you've just died and being able to see your family sobbing and wallowing in sadness without being able to do anything wouldn't make you happy, you would feel helpless.

You spend your whole life working and tiring yourself out, by the end don't you just want to sleep?

I'm Aly, thank you for your post. There's just so many possiblities right? I too am "impartial", I am open to the concept of religion but am not subscribed to any. I love your last line, that's a great way to look at it. :)

Hi beggars. Thank you for the post sharing about your Grandmother's passing is touching for me. Both of mine passed on some years ago and I miss them, loved them so much. We are told by Science now that everything is energy and it cannot be destroyed. So who knows what becomes of the energy that makes up our beings? For me all things great and small are a part of one life force, really, once dogma is taken out of the conversation, all religions have a unifying message.

t’s very important for people to remember that anger is powerful. So is selfishness along with cruelty. However, kindness overpowers all. You may think your kindness makes a difference for other people only, but it doesn’t. What comes around goes around, and your act will be returned. Your most important reward is knowing how much you just helped someone in need. You feel satisfaction knowing that you might have saved someone’s day, week, or even life. What you have really been given is the most precious gift you can receive, the gift of kindness. Everyone is capable of being kind. Everyone can help. The real question is, why don’t we? This should not be a question. Kindness should come automatically. It should be common rather than a rarity. We can make this happen and do something kind today.

This can't be predicted where some one goes after death? This is a challenge to all religions as they claim to solve this mystery. This is also challenge for doctors and scientists
