Among all the sciences of man, the most important science is wisdom, because this science teaches us to use all the others with a profit, wisdom is the knowledge of the correct means to live. For example, the nuclear energy, if this resource is used wisely we have the nuclear medicine, but if not, we have weapons of nuclear destruction.
And this is what the book of Proverbs is about, because wisdom teaches us to be precise and accurate in our decisions, and also instructs us on how to live in harmony with the ethical laws of the universe. For all this, the sensible life is about how to acquire wisdom and put it into practice; because the opposite of this is foolishness and the hardness of heart.
Wisdom is the most important immaterial good that we can receive, that is why the book teaches us:
"Get wisdom, get understanding;
do not forget my words or turn away from them.
Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you;
love her, and she will watch over you.
The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom.
Though it cost all you have, get understanding
Cherish her, and she will exalt you;
embrace her, and she will honor you" Proverbs 4:5-8.
In wisdom, the book tells us, is the true life of man, because wisdom has a great advantage: it is progressive, uplifting, and benevolent, and that brings with it that those who live by their side avoid destructive unforeseen events, that is, the stumbling blocks in the path of life. Wisdom is a bright path, while foolishness is a dark path.
With these words the wise man taught this spiritual truth:
"Listen, my son, accept what I say,
and the years of your life will be many.
I instruct you in the way of wisdom
and lead you along straight paths.
When you walk, your steps will not be hampered;
when you run, you will not stumble" Proverbs 4:10-12.
As a foretaste of the teachings of Jesus, wisdom is the true path to the fruits of the spirit: peace, joy, and love. And something else wisdom is the prelude to immortality or longevity. But the choice is up to us, we live as wise or as fools.
But we are warned, and as the saying goes: "Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm" Proverbs 13:20.
