5 Years Ago Today we had no money and I was working as a waiter...

Today is a special day for me, it marks the day 5 years ago that my family essentially had no money and I had to take any work I could find. I took a waiting job at a Melbourne Cup function (For those that don't know, The Melbourne Cup is Australia's biggest horse race...not that I care about horse racing!)

I had to work about 10 hours for minimal wage just so I could earn some money for my family.

At the time, I had just started my second business after selling my first. I burnt through all the cash from the sale of the first business in about 6 months as the new businesses started very slow. Plus my second son was just born and my wife was out of work.

So we had no cash, a business with no income, a new born baby and my wife couldnt work as she had just given birth.

I took any work I could find and when the waiting job came up I took it. It was very humbling as now I appreciate the work that job involves. I now know not to judge anybody so matter what they do for a work, how much money they have or what they look like.

Fast forward 5 years and I now run a business that has turnover of half a million dollars and earns me a 6-figure salary.

And when I feel unhappy or when I complain that I can't afford to buy a shiny new car or build a million dollar home, I think back to where I was 5 years ago and I am grateful that I have a nice car and a comfortable house. It may not be a Porsche and I may not have a massive 2 story home with a pool but I am comfortable.

The key thing was, even 5 years ago when I had no money and things were bleak, I never lost faith that my businesses would be successful and that we would have more than enough money in the future. I always knew and never doubted.
